Vrindavan Retreat

Historical evidence points to the origins of the ancient science of Ayurveda about 5000 years ago, a science dedicated to life and longevity. With its roots in the Indian subcontinent Ayurveda, seeks harmony of body mind and soul – combining a curative philosophy and non- invasive medicine. Ayurveda has evolved over time to become an adjunct of mainstream medical practice, based on the diagnosis of an individual's body fluids categorized as vata, pitta and kapha. Experienced practitioners of Ayurveda in Kerala carry forward an ancient tradition in which 'Vaidyans'(physicians) and their descendants have treated their patients for hundreds of years. Quite unlike elsewhere on the subcontinent, Ayurveda is not an alternative system of medicine in Kerala but functions in the mainstream.

Blessed with an equable climate, Kerala's fecund forests, the monsoon rains and cool air are naturally conducive to the curative and restorative properties of Ayurveda. Medicinal herbs and plants that are the ingredients of Ayurvedic medicine thrive in the region's nutrient rich soil. Additionally, the moisture in the air enables potions to permeate the body making an Ayurveda treatment in Kerala most effective.

Ayurveda in eye care

Ayurveda postulates that Pitta dosha, the element of fire and light, administers our eyes and that the sub-dosha Alochaka Pitta absorbs images and colours that an eye receives. The postulate states that when the Alochaka pitta in an individual's eyes is in appropriate balance, those eyes tend to be healthy, clear and luminous, their sights sharp.

When a pitta becomes aggravated, a patient experiences excessive heat within the body, becomes irritable, and experiences significant functional problems with their liver. Patients feel stressed, exhausted and ultimately burnout. Impaired vision and eye problems are often related to pitta overdrive and liver imbalance.

Ayurveda further postulates that the Tarpaka Kapha is responsible for keeping eyes lubricated, moist and cool. Prana Vata is responsible for the life force that runs throughout the head region, for movement of the eyes, blinking, and sensory perception. Ayurveda offers many natural, safe and effective techniques to regain the balance of humours in patient’s eye - improve vision, reduce eye strain, and heal ailments.
